The surgery shelf is a lot more medicine than actual surgical procedure. You need to know how to diagnose certain surgical conditions (eg pancreatitis= CT) and you need to know patient management in trauma ( abc's, signs of pneumothorax etc) You do NOT need to know surgical techniques for the shelf.

Took the Pediatrics NBME yesterday - my $0.02. As the title says, I took the Peds NBME yesterday and I wanted to leave my experience with it because there's relatively little out there. I thought the exam was 20% actual pediatrics-specific and 80% general medicine that applies to all patient populations. There were only 5 questions on milestones.

TBH, after buying those practice exams, I don't find the NBME explanation super helpful. Most of the time, they give you a 1-liner reason for why the answer is right and then repeat that 1-liner in the "concept to learn" portion at the end of the explanations. If you are expecting UWorld level explanations, the NBMEs won't provide that.
