Keep in mind that file validation *does not remove* files. So any cruft you have left over from mods is still going to be there.

That's perfectly normal, it happens all the time. As for it crashing, try rolling your video drivers back to an earlier version. There's been a problem with these games ever since the Windows 10 Anniversary update.
