The tailgate opens and closes like normal with the spring loaded gap cover thing rolling right over the tailgate pad.It doesn't look very padded along the top of the tailgate compared to various bike-company offerings (that don't fit well because of how fat the tailgate is). And even if it were, bikes don't hang well on the tailgate because of how fat it is.
