John deere 4020 problems.

I push the starter button and I hear the starter motor turning but the bendix does not engage the flywheel... or it is every so slightly engaging that it doesn't even sound like it's grinding. Key take away is "long time" you have some reserve between oil returning from something, cooler and reservoir. The time is the big difference between a problem or not.

Total for the rebuild was $700 but was still cheaper than buying a reman brake valve, at least according to the local JD dealer anyway. Good News....the original brake valve was rebuildable. It solved the entire problem and it stops great. No more wheel lock up. The JD 4020 is now ready to go back to work.

Gents, I have a 1964 4020 with the original 24 volt starter. Recently, after trying to start the tractor I noted the starter ran on after I released the key from the start position. The only way to stop the starter from turning was to removed the left battery terminal which resulted in a large spark.

I checked the needle valve in the carb as it was a problem last year. Nope, still nice and clean. Pulled a spark plug and turned the engine over, it showed a nice blue spark.

Oil will go through that hole and run down a trough to the oil tube. Remove the oil pressure gauge and take a small stiff piece of wire and you can unclog the hole. I had the same issue with a 37 A. Provided the tractors does not have any external oil leakage (lines, fittings, ???.) you have either an internal leak in the steering motor piston o-rings up front or a problem in the steering valve under the dash or possibly both.

It has the two metal fuel filters. loosen the bleed screw on the bottom one, pump the lever on the back side of the fuel pump until fuel starts to run out, close it and open the one on the top filter.Tractor. 4020 John Deere. I have a 4020 that ran really well up until November. It starts good , but idles rough and when you put it under load it stalls. If you pull the choke out it will come back to life and run OK. if you feather the choke back in, it will drive around OK in lower gear. Had a 4020 that the rubber plugs got hard and moved into the shaft tube and cut off the oil to the shaft. But it does sound like the problem is deeper.
