456 posts · Joined 2004. #6 · Mar 28, 2006. Nezzer, you have a choice of 4 weights in two types of gear oil. Mineral 80W90. Mineral 80W140. Synthetic 75W90. Synthetic 75W140. Ford has been recommending Syn 75W140 in later model truck diffs. That's the one to use if you want to fill and forget for the next 100K miles.
None so far have impressed me enough to consider buying (due to the condition of the truck overall, not the engine). There is a 2007 F-350 that just came up for sale here locally and the door sticker has the axle as "4N". This doesn't jive with any of the documentation I've seen for axle decoder. I'm hoping this truck has 4.30's.There were a few. Some required 75W-90 on this model, and others 75W-140, depending on the diff. Looks like you do know you need the 75W-140. The smaller units and that goes up to the 18,000 lb chassis use the Dana 80 differential. The fluid is about $27 a quart and the Dana 80 requires about 5 or 6 quarts.Likes: 4.
