The release pops without issue but isn't usually able to lift and raise without a helping hand. Is there a way to tighten the tension? All diagrams I've seen seem to indicate no.

I would disconnect the negative cable off the under-hood battery before replacing the trunk battery. Of course, all done with the key off and out of ignition.Take a flashlight with you and crawl inside the trunk from the back seat and look for a neon green or neon yellow release handle.
