You sacrifice a bit of range, but its not really noticeable anyway. Prime Capacitor and Tri-Barrel. You can technically stick to a single barrel if you value range over dps. The Pepper Shaker takes one second to spin up before it begins to automatically fire shotgun blasts of eight projectiles. It counts as both a shotgun and heavy gun, and will benefit from any perk within each weapon class. Like all multi-projectile weapons, the outgoing damage is split between the number of projectiles.

The pepper shaker can double dip with both shotgun and heavy gunner perks. If you min max without any other strength perks, that's a 105% boost. They can have fusion cell or plasma cartridge mods.
