A load that works great on people out of a .357, like a 125gr JHP, will not work well for heavy animals. Meanwhile, a .44spl with a hard cast swc, even if that would be considered less than ideal against a human threat, would be better on a large animal. I'd definitely vote .357 with the appropriate hard cast bullet.
